What differences exist between adolescents who participate in extracurricular activities and those who do not?
What will be an ideal response?
Extracurricular activities include such diverse activities as sports, honor societies, band, drama club, and various academic clubs. Researchers have found that participation in extracurricular activities is linked to higher grades, school engagement, less likelihood of dropping out of school, improved probability of going to college, higher self-esteem, and lower rates of depression, delinquency, and substance abuse. Adolescents benefit more from engaging in a breadth of extracurricular activities than they do when they focus on a single extracurricular activity. In addition, the more years that adolescents spend in extracurricular activities, the stronger the link with positive developmental outcomes.
