Examine the evolution of sculptural detail found on Chartres Cathedral. Contrast the growing naturalism of Chartres with the rigidity of Romanesque sculpture

What will be an ideal response?

Romanesque sculpture was stiff and formal and was more tightly fused to the structure like the portal or tympanum. Gothic sculpture portrayed greater realism and emotion in the figures and the poses were more natural, showing contrapposto stances and less verticality. The level of relief was more extreme where the figures seemed more animated and less a part of the structure itself.
