2. Its centralized octagonal plan derives from Early Christian and Byzantine martyria.
3. The central space is covered by a dome and surrounded by two concentric aisles, or ambulators, that permit the visitor to circumambulate the rock.
4. It has mosaic friezes with inscriptions from the Qur'an and others that depicts thick, symmetrical vine scrolls and trees that can be interpreted as the gardens of Paradise.
