Describe what is known about mtDNA replication and segregation
What will be an ideal response?
Ans: It appears that both of these processes are stochastic. Replication of mtDNA depends on mitochondrial mass, but there is no attempt to regulate the number of copies of a particular variant. There can be random loss of particular variants as a result. Also, there does not appear to be a specific segregation system for mtDNA, so that the mtDNA content of a daughter mitochondrion is random.
