What are some examples of foods, from abroad, that can contribute to food allergies?

Fruits or vegetables from other countries may have proteins or carbohydrates, called allergens, that are similar to those found in fruits found here such as strawberries or citrus fruits. Eating these unusual foods may trigger an allergic reaction because the antibodies bind to the antigens in the fruit and trigger the release of histamines from the body's white blood cells. People can have hay fever, skin rashes, asthma, or even an anaphylactic reaction when they come in contact with an allergen from any source. Nuts and legumes can also trigger severe allergies in many people.
