Explain why observations suggest the presence of dark energy in the universe.?

What will be an ideal response?

Observations show that the expansion rate of the universe was slower in the past than its current value. Gravity slows the expansion rate with time so the observed acceleration implies the existence of a new force or energy that h as not been recognized before.
