Better students will point out that while it meant cutting back federal power and balancing the budget, Eisenhower still projected the power of the federal government, and there was no "rollback" of the New Deal reforms. Good students will point out that the federal government spent money in other ways. Investments in education, resulting from Sputnik, and the construction of the interstate highway system are two obvious examples that most students will identify.
