Explain why there is a growing national trend to regulate electronic cigarettes (e-cigarettes).

What will be an ideal response?

Answers may vary.Although e-cigarettes don't produce secondhand smoke, they do produce secondhand vapor. Because the vapor can contain many of the same toxic chemicals found in cigarette smoke, there is a growing national trend to regulate the devices. E-cigarettes have been banned on aircrafts and in many cities and restaurants where traditional smoking is not allowed.Although e-cigarettes are marketed as safer alternatives because they have far fewer of the toxic chemical compounds found in cigarette smoke, the FDA warns of potential addiction and abuse of these products. The amount of nicotine an e-cigarette delivers depends on the strength of the liquid nicotine cartridge a smoker installs, which can contain nicotine comparable to light or ultra light cigarettes, or as much nicotine as regular cigarettes or more. Some cartridges also contain liquid without nicotine to help users continue to experience the sensation of smoking without the detrimental effects. The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention reports that one-fifth of traditional-cigarette adult smokers had tried e-cigarettes. The real concern is that if smokers use both traditional and e-cigarettes, rather than using e-cigarettes to quit cigarettes completely, the health consequences could be exponentially greater. Authorities also fear candy-flavored e-cigarettes may cause young people to use the devices as a "gateway" to conventional cigarettes. Federal surveys show that 17 percent of high school seniors currently use e-cigarettes.
