Describe the five trends that mark human evolution. Explain the significance of each. What will be an ideal response?
ANSWER: The first is precision and power of the grip. Being able to spread the toes and fingers and
making cupping motions of the hands aided the feeding process. The prehensile hand allowed
the fingers to be wrapped around objects and the opposable thumb allowed for fine hand
movements. Vision changed as the eyes moved to the front of the head. This allowed for
three dimensional vision and the eyes also adapted to color and day vision. Changes in teeth
and jaw bones allowed for a mixed diet. Brain regions expanded to promote new behaviors
and the new behaviors drove more brain development. Bipedalism or walking upright
allowed the hands to be used for tool making and other activities which were important in
human evolution.
