Revolutionary Armed Forces of Colombia (FARC) purports to support the rural farmers in Colombia against the wealthy class, but it is heavily armed and funded by the drug trade. Their goal is to reform the governments, but used bank robbing, kidnapping, and extortion as a means to obtain finances; they do however, distribute the money to the poor people living in the urban areas. Peru's most notorious leftist group is the Sendero Luminoso or Shining Path which combines mysticism, Marxism, teachings of Mao, and racial bigotry. They claim to be the vanguard of the world communist movement and are very brutal. Argentina has the Montoneros and the People's Revolutionary Army which incorporates radical Catholic principles.
The "new left" or "revolutionary thinkers" came from Europe during the 1960s and 1970s, which viewed underdeveloped countries as being exploited by Western powers, and embraced the role of being advocates. The Red Brigades of Italy became the largest leftist group in Europe and had three phases to overthrow the government: armed propaganda, attack the heart of the states, and finally a general civil war. Germany had the Red Army Faction (RAF), which were young German aristocrats against the government. The Revolutionary Cells and the Red Zora were also developed in Europe.
