Briefly explain how an IMAP server works

What will be an ideal response?

While POP3 provides for only temporary storage of a client's e-mail. IMAP stores e-mail on its server for as long as required, even permanently. IMAP is a more sophisticated mailbox service protocol and offers more ways for clients to access and control their e-mail. IMAP allows clients to create folders in their mailboxes in order to file their messages. Also, IMAP allows clients to view their mail in a list format by header only, so that clients can more easily select which messages they want to download. Finally, IMAP allows for search capabilities not provided by POP3, so a client can search messages based on the header, subject, or body of the message itself. The benefits of IMAP, though, come at a cost. IMAP requires much more in terms of network and system resources.
