Becoming a corrections professional means:
• To see yourself as a person of integrity and to live at integrity level. One definition of integrity is to do the right thing when no one is looking.
• To treat youthful offenders with dignity and respect. As one corrections professional put it, treat residents as you would want your father or brother to be treated in a correctional context.
• To model positive behaviors. One way this can be done is to adhere to the ethical principles set forth by the American Correctional Association.
• To be a person committed to a learning model and to be open to new ways of doing things. Such a person seeks to learn throughout his or her career and is always willing to pursue all the training opportunities available.
• To believe that it is possible to make a difference. Believe that you can have an impact and are not limited by what others have done.
• To keep your personal stuff from getting into the way. Do not let your personal problems or issues keep you from doing an effective job.
• To maintain a clean institution; cleanliness and orderliness of the facility are absolute necessities in correctional leadership.
• To remember the importance of accountability, attention to detail, and following the schedule.
• To refuse to accept unethical behavior from fellow staff members.
• To stay positive and do what is possible to create a workplace that is safe, healthy, and free of harassment in any form.
