Why are open compressors often started up for a short time in the off season?
What will be an ideal response?
The shaft seal on the compressor is kept "wet" by the circulation of refrigeration oil over it. If the compressor is off for a long period of time, the shaft seal can dry up and eventually leak. Periodic running of the compressor helps keep the shaft seal in good shape.
