How can historians put together the picture of early civilizations in the absence of writing/written history?

What will be an ideal response?

Students should be able to discuss the importance of archeological evidence as well as anthropologic studies to ascertain patterns of human settlement and development. For example, burial rituals, early buildings, artifacts of technology, and art such as cave paintings and human figurines all allow a moderate degree of insight into preliterate human history. Answers will vary.
