Compare love and marriage in the United States and in India, and briefly explain why there are differences
What will be an ideal response
In both societies, romantic love is a part of marriage. However, in India most marriages are arranged by the parents and marriage results in love; in the United States, love results in marriage. The ideas about love also differ in the two societies. India views love as a peaceful emotion that is based on long-term commitment and devotion to family, and can be created between two people. For Americans, love has a mysterious element, a passion that grabs the individual. The reason there are differences in the meaning and marriage practices in each society is that a group's marriage practices match its values and patterns of social stratification. In the United States, there is an emphasis on individuality and independence so mate selection is viewed as individual choice. In India, family devotion, which stresses children deferring to parental authority, matches its practice of arranged marriage. Arranged marriages also reaffirm caste and family lines. In the United States, family lines are less important, nor does the United States have a caste system.
