Describe pros and cons of using education interpreters (include the inverted pyramid of responsibility in your description)
What will be an ideal response?
Related services under IDEA include the use of interpreting services; however, it is important not to overuse such services, which could result in over-dependence by the students or further isolation from peers. Interpreters translate words into sign for students with hearing loss but may also participate in tutoring, general classroom assistance, planning, and sign language instruction. Teaching sign language to others so they can communicate directly with the student with hearing loss is important because students need unlimited access to communication. Some organizations feel so strongly about the importance of direct communication, that they think deaf students should be in separate settings where they all know how to communicate with each other. However, when this level of direct communication is not possible, it is important that the interpreter have excellent skills in facilitating communication with others. The inverted pyramid of responsibility simply indicates that as students age and transition to higher levels of school, they should do more and more work independently and communicate as much as possible for themselves.
