Kohlberg's stages of moral development have been criticized for their androcentrism; this is a logical criticism given the fact that Kohlberg was coming from a male perspective. Gilligan's work attempted to view the same concept from a female perspective, and noted that there was nothing inherently correct about Kohlberg's idea of moving toward an objective sense of justice compared to Gilligan's sense of moving toward a greater sense of empathy and an ethic of care. The sexism inherent in the dominant social power structures caused Kohlberg's work to be valued more than others and generally considered the gold standard, while Gilligan's work has gained more appreciation in more recent years as society becomes more aware of structural sexism.
