Explain what the concept of in situ performance means and why it is important in criterion validation.
What will be an ideal response?
The performance domain must be defined clearly before we proceed to developing tests that will be used to make predictions about future performance. As described in Chapter 4, the concept of in situ performance introduced by Cascio and Aguinis (2008b) is crucial in this regard. Performance cannot be studied in isolation and disregarding its context. Recall that in situ performance involves “the specification of the broad range of effects--situational, contextual, strategic, and environmental--that may affect individual, team, or organizational performance” (Cascio & Aguinis, 2008b, p. 146). A more careful mapping of the performance domain will lead to more effective predictor development.
