The four steps in classroom assessment are planning for assessment, monitoring children's progress, evaluating children's learning, and reflecting. In the first step, teachers choose the assessment tools they'll use and determine how and when they'll conduct assessments. Next, in the monitoring step, teachers observe and talk with children daily about their progress, and then they make changes in their instruction when children are struggling. The third step, evaluating, takes place after instruction: This is when teachers make judgments about children's achievement, usually through the use of authentic reading and writing materials. In the last step, reflecting, children reflect on their own achievement, and teachers take time to reflect on the effectiveness of their instruction.
