Matrix is the non-living material secreted to the outside of connective tissue cells. In most connective tissue, matrix is composed of proteins, like collagen and elastin, and complex carbohydrates. In bone, the original matrix is replaced with Calcium Phosphate. In blood, the matrix is water and materials dissolved in the water.
