How does poverty relate to risk? Provide examples with your answer
What will be an ideal response?
Students should be aware that poverty per se has no direct relationship to birth defects. However, variables associated with poverty can influence the development of the fetus. Families living in poverty may not have access to prenatal care, may not meet the nutritional needs of the mother, and may not seek treatment for disease. Housing conditions of people living in poverty may contain risks, such as lead or toxins in the environment. An impoverished community environment may also contain risks such as drugs and crime.
