Explain the purpose of meiosis

What will be an ideal response?

ANSWER: Meiosis is a process that reduces the chromosomal content of a cell to a haploid state so that a
daughter cell can fuse with another haploid cell from a different member of the same species. The union of the two haploid cells produces a diploid zygote with a unique genetic make-up,
containing genetic elements from both parents. This increases genetic variation in the species.
