How could evolutionary psychology explain Ann and Jeff getting married and having children? How does this explanation compare with that of Fromm?
What will be an ideal response?
Evolutionary psychology could explain having children because that perspective believes that we are innately motivated to pass on our genes, obviously through reproduction. Marriage, however, is not necessary for us to pass on our genes through our offspring. Evolutionary psychologists, therefore, explain this behavior as having some benefit to the species, especially women. Women withhold sex and offspring until marriage in order to be sure that men will continue to stay around and help the woman have, and raise, the baby.
This explanation is quite different from that of Fromm who could explain reproduction as a means for transcendence and fulfillment of the relatedness need instead of a need to pass on genetic material. Fromm’s theory emphasizes social factors as motivations for behavior; evolutionary psychologists emphasize biological explanations for social behaviors.
