Your roommate returns from class upset because her speech on the history of colonial

newspapers was a failure.

Although she researched the topic and did a good job of organizing
the material, her classmates did not respond enthusiastically.  She asks your opinion about
what she did wrong and how she can improve before her next speech.  What advice do you
give her?
What will be an ideal response?

This question requires students to first analyze why the speech failed--because it was a
topic that an undergraduate class would not find interesting.  From there, students must
explain that the roommate needed to analyze her audience better, especially in terms of
demographics and interests, and that she needs to think of ways to create interest in an
indifferent audience.
