Describe the typical growth patterns in middle childhood. Are there gender differences in growth patterns during this time?

What will be an ideal response?

Growth during the middle childhood years can best be described as "steady." Although there can be large differences, most children gain a little over 2 inches in height per year. This steady pattern of growth continues until the adolescent growth spurt. Until this growth spurt occurs in girls, boys continue to be taller and heavier. Girls, however, begin the adolescent growth spurt around age 11 and quickly become both taller and heavier than boys. Boys do not tend to experience the adolescent growth spurt until the ages of 13 or 14.
