The extraocular muscle associated with cranial nerve IV is which of the following?
a. inferior rectus c. interior oblique

D
Six muscles (the extraocular muscles) attach the eyeball to its orbit and allow movement of the eye. These muscles give the eye both straight and rotary movements. The four straight, or rectus, muscles are the superior, inferior, lateral, and medial rectus muscles. The two slanting, or oblique, muscles are the superior and inferior oblique muscles. Movement of the extraocular muscles is stimulated by three cranial nerves (CN III, IV, VI). CN VI, the abducens nerve, innervates the lateral rectus muscle; CN IV, the trochlear nerve, innervates the superior oblique muscle; and CN III, the oculomotor nerve, innervates the remaining muscles, the superior, inferior, and medial rectus and the inferior oblique muscles. Examining extraocular function is performed by observing corneal light reflex, performing the cover/uncover test, and testing the six cardinal fields of gaze.
