Explain the relationship between hormones and male violence
What will be an ideal response?
Testosterone, the chief hormone that produces masculine characteristics, has been frequently studied, especially for its role in sexual violence. A wide range of studies, using differing measures of violence, has led to the suggestion of a possible link between testosterone and male aggression. Higher than average amounts of crime committed by athletes have been attributed to the high levels of testosterone in male athletes. This link has also been raised with men and boys who take anabolic steroids to enhance athletic performance. The use of anabolic steroids appears to cause more aggressive and violent behavior. These relationships are correlational and not causative, however. It is just as likely that violent lifestyles lead to high testosterone levels. The conclusion regarding testosterone and aggression is that the hormone is involved in violence but is not the primary factor.
