List and explain the purpose of the components of a water pump.
What will be an ideal response?
The water pump consists of three components: impeller, shaft, and housing. The housing mounts the shaft and is machined with ports for inlets, outlets, bypass passage, and mounting holes. The impeller creates a small suction to draw coolant from the radiator and force it into the engine block. The impeller is press-fitted onto the interior end of the shaft. The shaft extends through the housing, bearing, and seal. On the outer end of the shaft is a mounting flange for the fan. On some vehicles, the shaft is mounted on a pulley to make a drive pulley; in other cases, the fan is mounted elsewhere.
