Explain how the mortality rate helps demographers in understanding the changes in a population.
What will be an ideal response?
Answers will vary. Mortality is the number of deaths in a population during a specified period. Demographers typically measure mortality using the crude death rate (also called the death rate), the number of deaths per 1,000 people in a population in a given year.A better measure of a population's health is the infant mortality rate, the number of deaths of infants younger than 1 year per 1,000 live births. Generally, as the standard of living improves-access to clean water, adequate sanitation, and medical care-the infant mortality rate decreases.Lower infant mortality greatly raises life expectancy, the average number of years that people who were born at about the same time can expect to live.
