Discuss the barriers to complete an Advance Directives.

What will be an ideal response?

A number of barriers are recognized:

First, most people don’t understand what advance directives are and how to access them.

Second older adults don’t recognize the importance of completing them before there is a problem (like mental incompetence). Denial and procrastination are prevalent among older adults regarding completion of the forms.

Third there may be a fear that once preferences are listed in writing they cannot be changed or limited to only some circumstances of illness (like terminality).

Some older adults don’t want to manage their own deaths and prefer their doctors or family members make the decisions.
