Define and provide an example of an amicus curiae brief.

What will be an ideal response?

An amicus brief is a document filed by interested parties who did not participate directly in the trial but either have a stake in the outcome or have research knowledge to offer the appellate court. They are typically filed by organizations on behalf of their members. For example, the American Psychological Association has filed numerous briefs with state and federal appellate courts on topics such as involuntary civil commitment, marriage equality, sexual orientation, eyewitness testimony, affirmative action, false confessions, professional licensing, child testimony in sexual assault cases, the forced medication of inmates, and the effects of employment discrimination.
