If you were mentoring a newly-hired teacher who was interested in presenting a unit on food safety, what suggestions would you have to help him or her get started?

What will be an ideal response?

First, it would be important for the new teacher to determine what children may already know about food safety so learning activities can be designed to reinforce and build on this knowledge foundation. You might also encourage the new teacher to use the National Health Education Standards (see, http://www.cdc.gov/HealthyYouth/SHER/standards) to help identify topics and behavioral indicators most appropriate for children at a particular grade level. You might also suggest that the teacher search for lesson plans posted on reputable websites to find ideas and activities that he/she may want to include. Once the new teacher has determined specific topics he/she wants to address, you would certainly encourage him/her to create written activity plans that identify behavioral objectives, instructional methods, content, and evaluation measures, and to use this information to improve future lessons.

A local non-profit organization known for their racist agenda requests the use of district facilities for prayer services and recruitment activities

By policy and practice Centerville School District has rented district facilities during non-instructional times to various non-profit community groups including the YMCA, Girl Scouts, and the Community Recreation Organization. The district charges a minimal maintenance fee and the cost of hourly janitorial services to open the facilities, clean the facilities after the community group leaves, and secure the building. A. Change the policy to prohibit rental of facilities to community groups B. Since the district has created an open forum the district must rent to all non-profit community groups C. Since the non-profit group has a known racist agenda the district may legitimately deny the request D. The district must rent their facilities to the group but should make sure that everyone knows that the district does not endorse the organizations views
