Distinguish between the stages of moral development in Kohlberg's theory. Provide illustrative examples of each stage.

What will be an ideal response?

Kohlberg's theory of moral development includes three stages. The preconventional stage represents a time when the person's moral behavior is driven by self-interest. In this stage, rules can be broken as long as you can avoid being punished for your behavior. An example might be Max deciding to steal the ball from Jimmy's backyard because he wants it and no one is watching. In the conventional stage, moral decisions are based on society's norms and standards. An example would be Ian deciding to drive at the speed limit because it would be against the law to exceed it. Lastly, the postconventional stage is a morality that reaches beyond society's rules and relies on higher abstract principles. An example would be Brian finding $300 on the sidewalk and turning it in to police because it is the right thing to do.
