Posttraumatic stress disorder is a continued disabling reaction in response to an excessively traumatic situation or event, such as war, terrorist attack, torture, rape, kidnapping, natural disaster, explosion, or fire. The patient feels helpless, has a numbed emotional response with disinterest in people and current events, and relives the trauma of the event over and over.
