The Herrera Family is a cartel of six interrelated family groupings, headed by a former Mexican Judicial Police Officer. Headquartered in Durango, the organization has around five thousand members. It is very difficult to infiltrate. The Family is the power structure in Durango.
In the US the Family operates out of Chicago, wholesaling Mexican heroin and marijuana to groups in NY, Philadelphia, Boston, Detroit, and Louisville. Executive-level directors and numerous field representatives in American cities manage the operation. The leader lived the life of a padrone, giving to the poor, befriending the rich, and playing godfather at weddings and baptisms. "In the village where the opium farmers lived, the clan built the water system, installed streetlights, and created a town square. Three hospitals benefited from the clan's philanthropy.".
