When religion and the culture are in conflict, three major patterns of adaptation are possible. Discuss the three adaptations and give a specific example of each

What will be an ideal response?

The three types of adaptations that religious groups make when religion and culture come into conflict include: rejection of the dominant culture, rejection of specific elements of the prevailing culture, or society rejects the religious group. Rejection of the dominant culture: members reject the dominant culture and have as little as possible to do with nonmembers of the religion. The Amish are an example. Rejection of specific elements of the prevailing culture: certain activities are forbidden, but members of the religion are able to participate in most aspects of the broader society. Example: Jehovah Witnesses. Society rejects the religious group: the society may only reject the religious group in some cases, but in other cases may try to destroy the group. Examples: Mormons in the United States; Branch Davidians.
