1. Historians have recorded trade in goods between regions since ancient times. Civilizations around the Mediterranean Sea traded among each other over land and by sea.
2. As transportation and communications technologies improved traders ventured farther, to the Far East and the Americas.
3. Freer trade began to flourish.
Over the centuries there have been periods of protectionism when countries believed it was in their best interests to restrict international commerce. The most recent occurrence of this was in the twentieth century until about 1980; after two World Wars and the Great Depression of the 1930s, governments became very protectionist and began to perform more of the economic functions in society.
Gradually this view changed, and in the last two decades of the century attitudes toward trade and market systems evolved. Today, this new view toward trade and markets is referred to as globalization.
