Why is sand so important in the desert environment?
What will be an ideal response?
Answer: Sand is the desert material that allows rapid infiltration of rainwater, is readily moved by heavy rains, and can be shifted and shaped by the winds. It is so plentiful because it is the usually smallest weathering size produced by mechanical weathering that dominates arid areas. Importantly, most of the world's desert surface is not covered with great depths of sand.
