Explain why the root edge must be removed when preparing a pipe for welding.
What will be an ideal response?
The root face is the small flat surface at the root of the groove. Failure to remove the root edge may result in the weld burning back the material, leaving too large a key hole to be filled by the weld. This may result in a concave root surface, sometimes referred to as suck back.
