Differentiate between decoding-based programs and holistic approaches to teaching reading?
What will be an ideal response?
Decoding-based programs typically emphasize a skills-based, “bottom-up” approach to reading whereas the holistic approach focuses on whole language. Decoding-based programs usually focus initially on teaching sound–symbol correspondences in language (e.g., c-a-t→cat). The focus is on direct teaching of a sequence of skills that begins with an emphasis on the phonological basis of language. Holistic approaches focus on the meaningfulness of language, stresses the importance of the child’s language as a bridge to literacy, and includes speaking, listening, and expressive writing as integral parts of literacy development.
