Families of children with ASD can experience stress associated with transitional planning. They may share their young adult’s excitement about the future, while also feeling uncertain about the challenges their child might encounter. They may also be unaware of how to navigate the transitional process to ensure it is a successful one. Smith and Anderson (2014) suggested that families of children with ASD feel less comfortable with the transition process, and they experience higher levels of anxiety prior to high school exit as they anticipate what will happen in the future. They may be concerned about post-secondary education—the level of coursework, potential problems in social arenas, their student’s preparedness, and the college’s ability to provide appropriate supports. The needs of families can be multifaceted and complex. “As such, successful programming to support families as they support their students through the transition process likely will need to include approaches that are intensive, comprehensive, and multidisciplinary”.
