Explain the idea behind syslog and how it is used.
What will be an ideal response?
Syslog stands for "system logger." The idea behind syslog is to allow multiple system utilities to log using the same mechanism, thus alleviating the need for every operating system utility to implement its own logging facility. Syslog can be used to log messages from Linux applications and tools, such as Web servers and e-mail programs. From a security standpoint, syslog also allows organizations to store logs on a separate system altogether, thereby helping to keep the logs away from abusers who might tamper with their contents and hide their own tracks.
