Explain how religion promotes gender inequality and patriarchy.

What will be an ideal response?

Varies. Most of the dominant religious figures throughout history have been men such as Jesus of Nazareth, the Prophet Mohammad, Confucius, and the Dalai Lama. Many religious groups, such as Roman Catholics, Orthodox Jews, and some evangelical Protestant denominations, still only allow men to serve as clergy. Many of the major world religions have supported patriarchy through their teachings and many holy texts define what are appropriate gender roles for their followers. Many religious teachings reinforce women's subordinate status to men and include guidelines for women's dress and behaviors.
