Recently in your community, there was a shooting which resulted in the death of a young male. The shooter, a middle aged male, claimed that he shot the deceased in self-defense. There were two witnesses to the incident
Each has given completely different accounts of the incident. You are assigned to question both witnesses and make an opinion as to whether either witness is untruthful. Both witnesses have refused to submit to a polygraph examination. What are your next steps?
First, plan for the interview. Find out as much as you can about the witnesses, the incident in question, and the previous statements of the witnesses. Next, select an appropriate location to hold the sessions. Check with the text as to the factors you should consider in selecting the location. Then conduct the questioning sessions using mostly open-ended questions and then follow up with direct questions. You will probably need to use testing-type questions. During the questioning sessions, watch for truth or deception indicators that were discussed in the text.
