An evaluative researcher is interested in measuring if social competency scores of youth in a school can predict grades of the youth, when annual income of their parents is taken into consideration? Please explain briefly the procedure for analyzing this relationship?

What will be an ideal response?

Ans: Measure each subject’s social competency level with a scale and list the scores in SPSS. Measure grades as a continuous interval level variable and list it as such for each subject in the study. The annual income of each subject’s parents must be recorded as an interval level variable. Make sure that the structure of the data makes it amenable for employing multiple regression analysis. First examine the variables descriptively. Second, examine the bivariate relationships among the variables and then proceed with the multiple regression analysis. The researcher would examine the value of R square to estimate the percent of the variance in the dependent variable grade that is explained by the independent variables, social competency and parents’ annual income, respectively. Then the researcher will examine the p value in the box labeled ANOVA to see whether the independent variables explain the dependent variables at a statistically significant level with a p value of at least .05 or less. Then examine the table that lists the coefficients to see whether either of the independent variables is a statistically significant predictor of the dependent variable grade.
