ADHD is a developmental disorder defined by bothbehavioral and cognitive characteristics

Discuss ADHD by presenting the main features of the diagnosis.

According to the video on Eric,
what possible factors contribute to the development of ADHD? How is ADHD treated? Provide
two intervention strategies.
What will be an ideal response?

ADHD is a behavioral disorder. The behavior must be present for at least 6 months and must
occur in more than 1 setting. Estimates range from 5% - 18%. The disorder is diagnosed as one of
three main types: hyperactivity/impulsive; inattention; and combined. Characteristics include:
extremely active, fidgets, impulsive, like a motor, cannot control their impulsive behavior, inability to
sustain attention for developmentally-appropriate periods of time, poor work habits, inattention to
detail.
On the video the discussion on the contributionsto the development of ADHD included genetic
factors, chemical and neurological disturbances and difficulties in the child's environment. In Eric's
case, it was said that he was having difficulty with his parents' separation. Children with ADHD have
IEP's. The treatment can vary from medication alone to medication with a treatment plan to no
medication and just a treatment plan. In Eric's case, he was on medication and attended a day
treatment program where all the children were diagnosed with ADHD. There were specific goals for
Eric to achieve. The goals were limited – only two in order for Ericto be able to achieve them.
According to the video, positive and negative reinforcement is used in the treatment plan. Parent
training can also be effective.
