If a company starts using a mark in a specific geographic area and uses the mark only in that area, the company will acquire the exclusive right to use the mark in that area based on its use in commerce. If another company registers the same mark, it may use that mark in the rest of the country but may not use it in the area where the mark has already been protected by its use in commerce.
