For 21 percent of the 1.7 million runaway/thrownaway youths, their episode involved physical or sexual abuse at home before leaving or fear of such abuse upon their return. Other problems reported included parental drug or alcohol abuse, mental health problems within the family, and domestic violence between the parents.
