To use bite-mark evidence, a chain of custody must be shown and an expert witness must be used, such as a dentist with training and experience as a forensic odontologist. In the 2000 case of Seivewright v. State the court stated that every court considering the issue has permitted the introduction of expert testimony on bite mark evidence. It noted that the usual method of evaluating a bite mark was to register both the bite mark and the suspect's dentition (i.e. the suspect's dental mark pattern), (2) compare the bite mark to the suspect's dentition, and (3) evaluate similarities or dissimilarities between the two. Bite-mark evidence is used primarily in criminal homicide cases in which police need to establish the identity of the defendant.
