Explain what distortion is, and how it can be prevented.

What will be an ideal response?

Distortion is when the metal bends or twists out of shape as a result of being heated during the cutting process. This is a major problem when cutting a plate. If the distortion is not controlled, the end product might be worthless. There are two major methods of controlling distortion. One method involves making two parallel cuts on the same plate at the same speed and time. Because the plate is heated evenly, distortion is kept to a minimum.

The second method involves starting the cut a short distance from the edge of the plate, skipping other short tabs every 2 ft (0.6 m) to 3 ft (0.9 m) to keep the cut from separating. Once the plate cools, the remaining tabs are cut.
